Maybe They'll Be Back Tomorrow

A poem from in the dark and Sharing is Caring Vol. 1

When I began to dream about writing on Substack I did not think I would be sharing poetry, of all things. I have never considered myself a poet. But I have always loved poetry. The problem was that I never studied very interesting poems in school and when I would look for poetry online it would go over my head. I'd have no idea what the poet was trying to say (I am aware that that probably says more about me than the poets out there!). 

Then I found poets on Substack. Poets like Rebecca Marie, Michelle Windsor, the Part Time Poets, Margaret Ann Silver. They write beautiful poetry that I can understand and relate to and love to read and soak up. 

While rocking my baby to sleep in the dark in the last two months I suddenly found myself writing poetry in my head. Where did this come from? I honestly think it's because I found poetry I loved and began to read as much as I could. These poems influenced me so much that, while bopping back and forth in the quiet, my brain processed my thoughts by weaving them together poetically. 

This poem I'm sharing today is the first of a couple of poems I wrote in my head in the dark. And then promptly typed out on my phone before finally getting to the dishes.

Maybe They'll Be Back Tomorrow 

My thoughts
are like butterflies
     fragile things
fluttering
from flower to flower.

I turn away
to take out my camera.
They feel too important
     and too beautiful
to miss.

I turn back
and they are gone.

Sharing is Caring Vol. 1

On a bit of a NEEDTOBREATHE, Wilder Woods kick. Loving Be Yourself, Banks, Let's Stay Home Tonight. I also love their Into The Mystery album, especially West Texas Wind and I Am Yours.

Every Easter we listen to Andrew Peterson’s Resurrection Anthology. We also draw a chalk cross on our driveway. Always fun and a little way to share the good news of the gospel.

My favourite life/mum hack is reserving books at the library. That way you can run in and know that there is a stack of books already waiting for you. Even better, look up Brighter Day Press book lists and reserve as many from one list as you can. You'll end up with a lovely stack of books that a lovely Christian lady has checked over already, so you're not feeding your kids all sorts of woke, liberal things but enjoying some beautiful books that really feed the souls and imaginations of your kids… and you! 

At the library we recently found this illustrated, kid-friendly version of Anne of Green Gables and they are so beautifully done! One day we will buy the set because who doesn’t love Anne with some gorgeous floral illustrations?!

Recently, a Hello Fresh recipe taught me how to properly cook skin-on salmon and it's so so yum with some spinach and veg, and our family's favourite sauce, Chipotle Aioli. Chef's kiss!
